About an hour from Sendai, you can dive into the waterfall basin of Akiu Ootaki, one of Japan’s three largest waterfalls, which is one of the rarest waterfall dives in the world. Diving under a waterfall with a drop of 55 meters.

The town of Onagawa, on the Sanriku coast of Miyagi Prefecture, is designated as a national park. The tsunami severely damaged the area, but it is now recovering strongly. There is a fishing area off Jinghwasan where the Oyashio and Kuroshio currents collide, and both cold and warm currents occur at the dive site. It is also interesting to enjoy diving with fixed nets, oysters, and sea squirt shelves.

Agojima Island in Onagawa, is a beginner-friendly site just 5 minutes by boat from Onagawa Port. With 11–12 m depth, rugged reefs, and narrow waterways, it offers scenic terrain. Year-round residents include pink dungfish, beaked sculpin, and true booyahs, while strong tides bring rich seasonal migratory fish.

The diving pool attached to the store is a true diving pool designed exclusively for diving training. A large circulation clean system operates 24 hours a day to keep the water hygienic and clear. Water quality is also controlled by human hands to maintain clean water quality at all times. Shower rooms are adjacent and locker rooms are available free of charge.

Koshiki Namiita Beach in Ofunato, Iwate, offers calm, shallow waters perfect for beginners. With seasonal scenery and ongoing seaweed bed restoration, it hosts abundant marine life. Unique for the coexistence of northern and southern species, it’s a site rich in biodiversity.

Kamo Aquarium in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, is famous for having the world’s largest jellyfish display. The diving area offers free parking, clean flush toilets, and calm conditions with depths of 8–12m. Its gentle environment and variety of sites make it ideal for beginners.

Yotsushima, or the Four Islands, is a rare “Jetty Dive” spot in Japan, located around Ruzaoan Island. Entry is from a ferry pier, just 5 minutes by boat. The harbor has parking, water, and flush toilets. The reefs host abundant marine life, with frequent sightings of large schools of fish.

Tobishima is located 39 km off the coast of Sakata City, and in August, the clarity is 20 to 30 meters. You can see the terrain dropping to 40 meters vertically. There are also a variety of corals and isoflavas, which are rare in the Tohoku region.

Sado Island is the second largest island in terms of area after the main island of Okinawa, and can be reached by ferry from Niigata Port in about 2.5 hours or by jetfoil in about 1 hour.
