Diving in Portofino

About 30 kilometers (18 miles) east of the capital city of Genoa is Portofino. It is a world-famous town with only about 500 year-round residents, but it is known as the birthplace of Italian diving. Established in 1999, this protected area heavily regulates recreational fishing, so it is one of the most biodiverse areas for divers in all of Italy. Punta Secca Carega is a well-known dive site here and the original Christ of the Abyss, a giant underwater statue, is also a must-see in Portofino.
