Diving in Kulkwitzer See

The Kulkwitzer See is a lake on the outskirts of the town of Markranstädt, Saxony, some 11km (7mi) southwest of the city of Leipzig.

The lake emerged from two former lignite mining sites; from 1864 coal was mined there, initially underground, and after 1937 from an open pit.

With an average depth of 20m (65ft), its limited expanse does not do it justice, as its considered by some to be one of the most interesting dive sites in Southern Germany. Its former mining structures; large rails, rusty platforms, and meandering paths, echo of industrial minimalism, while its diverse species of freshwater fish, keep the lake teeming with life.
