In the world of scuba diving, few operations have a legacy as long and trusted as Paihia Dive. Based in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands, this family-run dive center has introduced generations of divers to the legendary Rainbow Warrior wreck - and built a reputation for excellence along the way.

Their recent move to join the SSI family marks an exciting new chapter. But this evolution is not just about a change in training agency. It reflects a deep commitment to modernizing dive education, making wreck diving more accessible, and continuing a mission built on passion, safety, and community.

We spoke with Craig Johnston - veteran diver, instructor trainer, and owner of Paihia Dive - about the team’s vision, the Rainbow Warrior’s 40th anniversary, and what makes diving in the Bay of Islands so unforgettable.

Hint: it is a peaceful, world-class island destination that is still off the radar for many global divers.

About Craig & Paihia Dive

Paihia Dive was founded in 1978 and became a PADI dive store in 1980. Based in Paihia, a small town in Northland’s Bay of Islands, the center has long been a cornerstone of New Zealand diving.

Craig learned to dive there in 1988, became a dive instructor in 1993, and purchased the shop in 2010. He has remained active as a guide and educator ever since, now holding the title of SSI Instructor Trainer

Craig and his team have introduced thousands of divers to the Rainbow Warrior and are known across New Zealand for their deep connection to the wreck, their community values, and their commitment to safe, high-quality dive training.

Interview with Craig Johnston, Owner of Paihia Dive

1. Your Journey with Diving and the Store

Can you tell us how Paihia Dive got started and how it has evolved over the past 40+ years?

Paihia Dive opened its doors in 1978, started by Anne Corbert and Garth Craig. I learnt to dive at Paihia Dive in 1988, then did my Divemaster here in 1992. I purchased the shop in 2010 after a career in diving.

We are continuing with the passion for the Bay of Islands' underwater world. It began as a small operation and grew into a respected dive center, always focusing on safety, great service, and love for the marine environment.

We have updated our methods but kept our family-run spirit.

You have been diving the Rainbow Warrior since 1988 - how has that shaped your passion for wreck diving and influenced Paihia’s focus on it?

Diving the Rainbow Warrior since 1988 ignited my passion for wreck diving. The history of the Rainbow Warrior and rich marine life made it a world-class site and a key part of Paihia Dive. Our long experience with the wreck makes us specialists, ensuring safe and memorable wreck dives.

What has kept you (and your team) so committed to the Bay of Islands all these years?

Our commitment comes from the Bay's incredible natural beauty, both above and below water, offering diverse dive sites. The strong local community and the fulfilling lifestyle of sharing our passion in such a beautiful place have kept us here.

2. The Move to SSI

What inspired you to switch to SSI after 45 years with PADI?

After 45 years with PADI, we switched to SSI to evolve and better serve our team and students. We sought more flexibility, modern educational tools, and a global network that fit our future vision.

It was a careful decision to improve our dive programs. Sam Jupe’s (SSI NZ area manager) passion for the SSI System and his perseverance in building a relationship with Paihia Dive were key.

We work in diving to build connections with people, and Sam is a remarkable ambassador for SSI.

What made SSI stand out as a better fit for your team, your students, and your long-term goals?

SSI stood out due to its digital learning platform, which streamlines teaching for our team. For students, SSI's accessible digital materials offer convenience and engaging learning.

For our goals, SSI's global recognition, support, and innovation provide a strong framework for growth.

Now that you have joined SSI, what advantages have you already seen - and what are you most looking forward to?

Since joining SSI, the digital platform has simplified tasks. Students love the modern materials. We find SSI's skill development thorough and adaptable. We look forward to using SSI's network for referrals and enhancing our reputation with their new specialty programs.

3. The Rainbow Warrior Wreck - 40th Anniversary

The Rainbow Warrior is a globally recognized wreck - what does it mean to you personally, and to the New Zealand dive community?

The Rainbow Warrior is a powerful symbol. Personally, it is a significant part of my diving life and New Zealand's history. For the New Zealand dive community, it is a unique piece of our heritage, a globally important environmental statement, and a source of pride, drawing divers worldwide.

Tell us about your connection to the Rainbow Warrior dive - how has Paihia Dive been involved since its sinking?

Paihia Dive has a deep connection to the Rainbow Warrior. We were present at its sinking at Matauri Bay in 1987 and have dived it since then.  I started diving the wreck in 1988.

We have done countless guided dives, introduced thousands to its beauty, and helped preserve it, ensuring divers experience its history with respect and enthusiasm.

What makes the Rainbow Warrior such a special dive site, even 40 years later?

Even after 40 years, the Rainbow Warrior is special because of its captivating history of environmental activism. It is also a superb artificial reef, teeming with marine life

Its accessibility makes it an ideal first wreck dive, combining history, nature, and a challenge - securing its place as one of New Zealand’s most iconic wreck diving experiences.

What did you do to mark the 40th anniversary of the Rainbow Warrior this July?

For the 40th anniversary this July, we planned special commemorative dives. We shared stories, celebrated its role as a historical monument and marine habitat, and highlighted its environmental message. Details were shared on our Facebook and Instagram profiles.
