The locals know Kwajalein Atoll as the “airplane graveyard.” This atoll has over 100 airplanes resting in the sand after being pushed off the back of a ship at the end of WWII. It used to be too costly for the U.S. to ship back to their country all the airplanes and equipment that they had transported to Kwajalein for the war, so instead, they dumped much of those planes and equipment into Kwajalein’s lagoon, where they have been sitting underwater for over 70 years. Kwajalein Atoll can be a bit difficult to reach; it is still an active U.S. Military base, and visitors need sponsorship from a Kwajalein resident. However, diving in Kwajalein Atoll is a guaranteed adventure.
