For decades, the scuba diving community has measured safety through equipment checks, gas management, dive planning, and adherence to depth limits. These physical and technical standards remain the foundation of our sport. But dive culture is evolving, and so is our understanding of what it means to feel safe underwater and on the surface.

Today, dive safety goes beyond gear and bubbles. Scuba diving professional conduct means protecting personal boundaries, supporting emotional safety, showing mutual respect, and upholding professional ethics. As a global leader in diver education, SSI is committed to this cultural shift, introducing enhanced ethical standards and updated training modules into our Instructor Training Courses (ITCs) to help build a safer, more inclusive dive community worldwide.

A Modern Approach to Scuba Diving Safety and Respect

Scuba diving is an immersive experience that brings instructors, divemasters, and students into close contact. From adjusting equipment to assisting students underwater, these interactions require trust and respect for personal boundaries. Clear, proactive professional standards help ensure a positive experience for everyone involved.

SSI's updated guidelines focus on two critical areas of professional conduct:

1. Privacy and Digital Consent in Scuba Diving

In the digital age, capturing and sharing underwater memories has become second nature. But a student's likeness, personal media, and private moments belong to them.

The SSI Standard: Explicit, documented consent must always be obtained before recording, photographing, or publishing a student's image for marketing, promotional, or public social media use.

The Reality: Casual tagging or sharing during a course does not constitute consent for marketing use. Respecting a student's digital privacy helps build trust from the very first breath underwater.

2. Physical Boundaries, Intentional Contact, and Professional Conduct

Scuba diving often requires physical contact, whether assisting with buoyancy, adjusting a BCD strap, or helping a diver stay stable in a current.

The SSI Standard: Physical contact must be strictly limited to what is essential for safety, instruction, or emergency assistance. It must always remain professional and respectful and must never be abused.

The Reality: Professional leadership means recognizing and respecting personal boundaries, communicating clearly before making equipment adjustments, and helping students feel safe and respected at all times.

Accountability and Open Communication

A standard is only as strong as its enforcement. SSI is committed to upholding the highest levels of professional conduct across our global network of Training Centers and Professionals.

We maintain a rigorous Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure accountability. If any diver or student feels that these standards of professionalism, personal boundaries, or ethics have been compromised, we encourage open communication and reporting.

Report an Incident: If you experience or witness behavior that does not align with SSI standards, please contact our Quality Management team directly at incident@divessi.com. Every report is handled with the utmost seriousness, discretion, and care.
