It had the eighth largest economy in the world today and ranks as the 6th richest nation in the world. Italy consists of 20 separate regions, five of which have certain levels of autonomous governing authority. It is also known for its beautiful, temperate Mediterranean climate. Italy is a peninsula in southern Europe, famously shaped like a boot that is surrounded by three parts of Mediterranean; the Adriatic Sea, the Ionian Sea, the Ligurian Sea, and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is gamed for its history, culture, and food and also features some of the best diving in all of Europe. It covers 301,340 square kilometers (116,350 square miles) and shares borders with France, Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland and two microstates that lie fully within its borders, Vatican City and San Marino. It was famously the home of the Roman Empire beginning in the 1st century and the birthplace of the Renaissance period in the 14th century.
