How Do You Train the Best Cave Divers?
In Mexico's Riviera Maya, where thousands of kilometers of underwater caves stretch beneath the jungle, ProTec Dive Centers trains some of the world's most capable technical divers. Here is how they do it—and why their approach matters.
ProTec has been a leader in tech diving for more than two decades. Why join SSI now?
From the very beginning, our mission has been to train divers who prioritize team diving, maintain heightened awareness through finely tuned skills, and follow a rigorous system of procedures and protocols. SSI shares that same philosophy.
Joining SSI allows us to combine our field-tested expertise with a training agency that offers a modern digital learning system, advanced instructor tools, and the backing of a worldwide support network.
What can divers expect from training with ProTec?
Divers now have access to certifications recognized in thousands of SSI dive centers worldwide, without losing the personal attention and small-group approach we have always emphasized.
It also allows divers coming from an SSI background to remain within a system they are already familiar with.

ProTec
Cave diving demands discipline, awareness, and real-world experience — exactly what ProTec teaches.
How does SSI's digital learning platform support ProTec's students?
The platform and all the materials on it are very impressive and will help our students to prepare for their classes before arriving at one of our facilities. We love teaching detailed theory sessions in our state-of-the-art multimedia classrooms, and better-prepared students make for better discussions.
Will ProTec stay focused on cave and technical diving?
Yes, we have no plans to teach recreational diving. We will stay focused on what we do best: technical, rebreather, and cave diving.
Cave and technical diving are at the very core of who we are—our instructors are real-world, active cave explorers who regularly take part in global expeditions.
Our true forte is undoubtedly sidemount diving, as our Training Director is the developer of the renowned XDEEP Stealth 2.0 sidemount system and has been a driving force in this field for over two decades. We will continue offering advanced training across all specialties and disciplines.

Why is the Riviera Maya one of the most exciting places in the world to train—and dive?
Mexico's Riviera Maya is home to the most extensive submerged cave systems in the world, with over 1,700 km of explored and surveyed passages. These vast networks are among the most stunning and technically challenging underwater caves on the planet.
By joining SSI, we can help raise the region's visibility, attracting more divers and instructors who want to experience these unique dive sites and our world-class training. It is exciting to see our local community become part of a worldwide network of divers and educators.
What would you say to divers dreaming of their next challenge?
Whether you are just beginning your journey into technical diving or are already an experienced overhead or mixed-gas diver, this partnership opens doors to new opportunities. What does not change is the personalized, high-quality training ProTec is known for.
