International Waterbird Count - Îles de la Madeleine Park
In Senegal, the International Waterbird Count (IWC) has become a core government activity coordinated by the National Parks Directorate with the participation of several partners. The data collected feeds into national and international databases, enabling the identification of trends and threats to wetlands before they become catastrophic.
The main objectives of the IWC are:
- To estimate the population size of observed bird species;
- To establish population trends for the different bird species observed;
- To support decision-making regarding wetland management.
These objectives contribute to more effective conservation of biodiversity in general, and waterbirds and their habitats in particular. As usual, this activity takes place on January 15th each year at all sites managed by the National Parks Directorate.
For the Parc des Îles de la Madeleine, the Nautilus is making one of its boats and its team available free of charge to the park rangers who will carry out the counting activity.
