Diving in the North

Located at the threshold of the soaring Dinaric Alps, Kvarner bay, also known as the Kvarner Gulf, is a bay in the northern Adriatic Sea, located between the Istrian peninsula, and the northern Croatian Littoral mainland. The bay is part of Croatia’s northern internal waters and is dramatically beautiful with its rocky walls, sweeping beach and crystalline turquoise water, making it a favourite holiday hot spot.

It is known as one of the most beautiful bays in the Adriatic sea, and with diving possible all year round, its warm clear waters offer divers one of the best diving destinations in the Eastern European landscape.

Istria, the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, is located between the Gulf of Trieste and the Kvarner Gulf, in the top half of the Adriatic. There you will find the islands of Cres, Krk, Pag, Rab and Lošinj, with a portion known as Kvarnerić (meaning “little Kvarner“), nestled between Cres, Krk, Rab and Pag, and a portion east of Krk and Rab, called the Senj Channel.

Kvarner’s rugged coastline and crystal clear waters give rise to an underwater realm renowned for its amazing wall dives, and craggy reefs many of which are covered with magnificently colourful gorgonians.

The bay, notable for its depth, with its more than 100m (328ft) under the sea level.

Wildlife in North

With Its lively marine life, sunken ships, and underwater flora, the gulf of Kvarner is a treasure for divers of all interests. It is not uncommon to witness large schools of tuna chasing other fish, like dentex, dorado, or John Dory, jumping in and out of the Bay’s waters. In shallower waters, around the rocky reefs, and between the fields of stunning gorgonians, you will find red scorpionfish, lobster, octopus, crab and seahorse. Scattered around the islands, the numerous Shipwrecks offer something for divers of every level. These encrusted underwater vessels are homes to many sea creatures, including conger eels, sole, and the darting schools of tuna.
