Diving in Borneo

If you’re looking for incredible landscapes, the island of Borneo promises breathtaking sites, from the jungle-clad interior to the reefs, caves, walls and muck dive sites that make up the topography below the surface of the sea.
Split between Indonesia, Brunei and Malaysia, this dreamy island – the largest in Asia – is surrounded by sandy atolls and paradise isles is home to incredible underwater experiences, whether you want to dive with whale sharks or get up-close to huge manta rays.
From here you will have access to the striking Derawan Archipelago, featuring the islands of Derawan, Sangalaki and Maratua, where hawksbill and green turtles cruise the edge of the reefs, while pygmy seahorses and huge dugongs also call these waters home. There are over 400 different types of coral to be found here, you can enjoy shore dives to spot critters or head further out to enjoy the clearest waters. Join a liveaboard and you can island-hop to explore the amazing variety among these islands.
One truly unique experience is to dive one of the lakes here, where you can swim among thousands of elegant jellyfish that have evolved to be stingless. It is one of the only places in the world where this phenomenon has taken place due to a complete lack of predators.

Wildlife in Borneo

Each of the islands that make up the glorious Derawan Archipelago has something a little different to offer divers. If you love macro, you should head to Derawan itself, where you can spot sea dragons, frogfish and various shrimp, while Maratua Island is perfect for spotting reef sharks, as well as eagle rays and shoals of barracuda. On Sangalaki Island you could be lucky enough to see whale sharks, while manta rays also come here to breed and there is even a turtle nursery.
