外洋には大規模な保護区が必要だ

国連、ニューヨークで海洋保護について交渉2030年までに保護区のネットワークが世界の海洋の少なくとも30%を人間の干渉から守ることが可能であることを、グリーンピースと一流の海洋学者が新しい研究で示した。
独立環境保護団体は、ニューヨークで開かれた外洋保護に関する国連(UN)交渉について、「

現在、国の領海外の外洋のわずか1%程度しか保護されていない。今回の研究では、グリーンピースとイギリスのヨーク大学、エジンバラ大学、オックスフォード大学の科学者が、生物多様性の高い生息地、移動種のルート、特に脆弱な生態系をつなぐ環境データをもとに、大規模な保護区ネットワークをモデル化した。
