Diving in Middle Croatia

The northern Dalmatian coast, a narrow belt of the east shore of the Adriatic Sea, offers some of the most interesting diving in Croatia. The north and south coast forms part of Dalmacija, one of the four historical regions of Croatia, alongside Croatia proper, Slavonia, and Istria.

Stretching from the island of Rab in the north, to the ’finger-like’ peninsula of Ražanj in the south, the northern Dalmatian coastline is characterised by the majestic Dinaric mountain range, it’s cobalt blue waters, and more than 10 islands, including the Kornati archipelago, also a national park, and many islets. It is possible to dive in this stunning national park, but only with certain authorized dive centers.

When you dive this dramatic coastline, you are exploring a world of hidden caves and caverns, of sheer vertical walls and huge rocks. The visibility is spectacular an often better than what you will experience further to the north, which makes it even more enjoyable to explore the forests that blanket the walls. From sponges to red and yellow coral, you will see it all.

In general, northern Dalmatia offers a more historical and relaxed concentration of highlights than the more popular and touristy southern Dalmatia. With its Italianesque cities, alluring national parks, unspoilt islands, and its many beaches, the region has something for every diver.

Wildlife in Middle

The island of Ist is the perfect site to go reef diving, and for the more adventurous drift diving. While on Škarda Island, you can’t miss the magnificent, and very steep, underwater walls, Just north of the two islands is Premuda Island, with caverns, caves, and craggy reefs. On Dugi Otok, you can also explore a system of caves, while taking in the gorgonian fields, and the many steep walls on offer. South of Dugi Otok, is in contrast tiny Mezanj Island, where divers can explore steep underwater walls, canyons, and many caves.
