Ancient Menacing Predators

With their large, lizard-like bodies, powerful tails, and sharp teeth protruding from their over-biting upper jaw, alligators are easy to identify and hard to miss. Their strong, dominating presence inspires fear in many people, especially those that pass too closely; however, they are a magnificent site to see in the wild. There are just two species, the American alligator, native to the southeastern United States, and the smaller Chinese alligator, native to the Yangtze River valley. The Chinese is extremely endangered with only a few dozen still living in the wild, as opposed to the American that has returned from the brink of extinction to a healthy wild population.
